CHAPTER TEN

We were getting married tonight.

The King couldn’t have been clearer about his intentions. Right there, in front of all of his friends and neighbors, King Kalban had declared that our wedding would happen tonight. Don’t get me wrong, the aesthetic of his vision for the wedding, what he had spent some time entertaining the crowd with, sounded beautiful; a moonlit ceremony amidst glowing lanterns, enchanting music, and the scent of spring itself, wouldn’t exactly make for the most traditional of marriages, but it had an almost magical appeal to it that was difficult to ignore.

I needed to get out of the dining area, I needed air even though we were essentially outdoors, surrounded by columns and arches and with a roof over our heads. So, I’d decided to excuse myself and headed outside, following the marble path leading away from the dining area and into the palace’s back gardens.

Straight away I was struck by how fresh the flowers and the grass were, how ripe and ready to be plucked all of the fruits sitting on the trees were, and how clean and even the marble tiles were. Everything about Elandor was perfect, not a single detail out of place, or odd in any way. I couldn’t imagine a more wonderful place if I tried, and I was going to be its queen.

So, why did I need to get away from the King and his talk of weddings?

A quick glance at my back told me no one had come out in pursuit, not even Cherie, so I decided to take a stroll around the gardens and return, hopefully by that time the King would have gotten bored of planning our wedding. Then I saw him—Lucien, the King’s son—standing by the fountain the path I was walking on would lead me directly to.

I froze, and in that instant considered heading back, turning around, but he had seen me, and doubling back would have sent him a clear and obvious I don’t want to talk to you message. But that just wasn’t true. I did want to talk to him, I wanted to find out what had caused him to abandon dinner like that.

Before I knew it, my feet were carrying me toward him, hands nervously tugging at my hair and dress to make sure I was as tidy as possible.

Lucien, watching me approach, turned to the fountain, dipped his hands in the water, and ran them across his face. When he turned to look at me, the fringe of his hair and his face were wet, making his eyes seem to pop in the amber light of late evening. The sun would set soon, and I didn’t want to be outdoors when it did, but I also couldn’t turn my feet around, not yet.

“Hello,” I said when I thought I was close enough.

“Princess,” Lucien said, bowing slightly, “Aren’t you enjoying your dinner?”

“I am, I just thought I’d take a stroll through the garden at twilight. It’s my favorite time of day.”

Lucien’s eyes roamed the grounds, then returned to me.
